Sanctuary AI Advances Toward Human Intelligence with Phoenix: A Robot for the Future
Sanctuary AI continues to lead in the field of humanoid robotics with its latest unveiling, Phoenix, aiming to be the first general-purpose robot (GPR) with human-like intelligence. This development builds on impressive previous work and a novel piloted training approach.
The humanoid form, though not the most efficient for a useful robot, is perfect for taking on as many human tasks as possible, given the world is primarily constructed for bipedal creatures with five-fingered hands and opposable thumbs. Phoenix stands out not only for its ability to correctly perform 110 retail-related tasks during a pilot trial at a Canadian Tire Corporation store but also for its innovative learning system through telepresence.
Human operators, using a VR headset and motion capture equipment, control the robot while its AI system observes, feels, and learns, preparing it to take on tasks autonomously. Although Phoenix currently does not walk, opting for a wheeled platform, its hands are true works of art with 20 degrees of freedom and haptic technology, enabling it to perform tasks with astonishing precision. Its Carbon-based system promises to allow it to think and act in completing tasks like a human, opening a new chapter in humanoid labor robotics.
