OpenAI published GPT-5.6 as a new family of models aimed at demanding work, coding and security tasks. The company also put the model at the center of Microsoft 365 Copilot, making the launch an enterprise product move rather than only a laboratory update.

OpenAI’s official RSS feed listed “GPT-5.6: Frontier intelligence that scales with your ambition” on July 9. In that entry, the company summarizes the launch as more intelligence from every token, stronger performance per dollar and more on-demand capability for hard work.
The same day, OpenAI published another page saying GPT-5.6 is now the preferred model in Microsoft 365 Copilot for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Chat and Cowork. It also introduced “ChatGPT for your most ambitious work,” a product page that places the new generation inside desktop, web and mobile workflows.
TechCrunch corroborated the launch and reported that the GPT-5.6 family arrives in three variants: Sol, Terra and Luna. According to that coverage, OpenAI positions Sol as the main option, Terra as an intermediate alternative and Luna as a lower-cost version. The outlet also reported that the company is promoting improvements for enterprise work, coding, scientific research and cybersecurity.

The story matters because it shows where competition among AI labs is moving: less toward one single flagship model and more toward model families designed for different combinations of cost, speed and capability.
