NVIDIA agrees to buy Hugging Face for $12.93 billion

NVIDIA announced on September 3 that it has agreed to acquire Hugging Face for $12.93 billion, a deal that would move the leading AI infrastructure supplier directly into the center of one of the most widely used open-model developer platforms. The company says Hugging Face will remain an open platform and that developers will not be required to use NVIDIA compute to build or deploy models.

What happened

In a post signed by Jensen Huang, NVIDIA said it had agreed to acquire Hugging Face for $12,930,300,000. The official post frames the deal as a way to scale Hugging Face’s platform, strengthen its infrastructure and expand access to AI tools for developers, researchers, companies and institutions.

Hugging Face’s scale explains why the news is bigger than a routine technology acquisition. According to NVIDIA, the platform is used by more than 18 million developers, researchers and creators; hosts more than 3 million models, 500,000 datasets and 1 million applications; and is used by more than 200,000 companies to discover, evaluate, customize and deploy AI.

TechCrunch and NBC News corroborated the announcement on the same day. TechCrunch reported that NVIDIA confirmed the $12.93 billion purchase and highlighted Hugging Face’s role as a distribution point for models, datasets and applications. NBC News added that the transaction includes about $11.9 billion for Hugging Face investors and up to $1 billion in an equity-based retention program for employees who join NVIDIA.

Why it matters

The deal moves NVIDIA beyond chips and compute racks. Hugging Face functions as a distribution, discovery and collaboration layer for open-source models, open-weight models, datasets, demos and deployment tools. If the acquisition closes, NVIDIA would not only sell the infrastructure used to train or serve AI; it would also directly control a platform where much of the ecosystem decides which models to test, compare and move into production.

The most sensitive part of the message is the promise of openness. Huang wrote that Hugging Face will continue to support open-source and open-weight models from across the ecosystem, multi-cloud and multi-accelerator development and deployment, and developer choice across models, frameworks, inference providers, clouds and compute platforms. What changes for companies and developers

For teams that use Hugging Face as a repository, informal benchmark layer, distribution channel or experimentation hub, the change does not by itself imply an immediate technical migration. What is confirmed is NVIDIA’s acquisition agreement and its stated intent to keep the platform open. Changes to pricing, terms of service, inference providers, model governance or publishing policies have not been confirmed.

Even so, the acquisition can alter incentives. NVIDIA gains a more direct relationship with millions of developers and companies looking for smaller, specialized or lower-cost models. It can also package infrastructure, inference tooling and enterprise services more tightly around workflows that already happen on Hugging Face. For the open ecosystem, the practical question will be whether that scale arrives without reducing real choices for teams using AMD, Intel, competing clouds or models from rival labs.

What remains unconfirmed

Still unconfirmed are regulatory conditions, closing timeline, operating integration, possible formal neutrality commitments, employee impact and concrete changes for enterprise users or open-source communities.

It does not prove that Hugging Face will close off access or that NVIDIA will displace other providers, but it does place a central piece of the open-model ecosystem inside the strategy of the dominant AI hardware company.
