Meta postpones the launch of its multimodal AI models in the European Union

Meta has decided not to launch its multimodal artificial intelligence models in the European Union due to regulatory uncertainty in the region. This measure particularly affects advanced AI features in products such as the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. Although the glasses will still be available, AI-driven features like the ability to interpret what the user sees and provide real-time information will not be enabled for users in the EU.

The main concern lies in complying with the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Meta planned to use publicly shared data from Facebook and Instagram users to train these AI models but faced opposition from privacy regulators in Europe. Meta argues that without this data, the models would not adequately capture the cultural and linguistic nuances of the region, resulting in an inferior experience for European users.

This move aligns with similar decisions by other tech companies like Apple, which has also postponed the launch of its advanced AI features in Europe due to regulatory concerns. Meta remains committed to working with European regulators to eventually offer its AI services in the region, but for now, the advanced AI capabilities of its smart glasses and other multimodal products will not be available to users in the EU.
