Elon Musk says xAI will open-source Grok this week

Elon Musk announced that his AI startup, xAI, will open-source Grok, its ChatGPT-rivaling chatbot, this week. Grok, released last year by xAI, is equipped with features like access to 'real-time' information and data that counter 'politically correct' views. The service is available to customers who pay X's $16 monthly subscription. Musk, who did not detail which aspects of Grok he plans to make open-source, co-founded OpenAI with Sam Altman nearly a decade ago as a counterweight to Google's dominance in artificial intelligence.

However, he alleges that OpenAI, which was also supposed to make its technology 'freely available' to the public, has become closed-source and shifted its focus to maximizing profits for Microsoft. Musk's lawsuit has sparked a debate over the merits of open-source AI, with figures like Vinod Khosla and Marc Andreessen weighing in on the discussion. Musk has long been a proponent of open-source, with Tesla opening many of its patents under the principle that 'Tesla will not initiate patent lawsuits against anyone who, in good faith, wants to use our technology.' X, formerly known as Twitter, also made some of its algorithms public last year.
