For years, the AI-and-cybersecurity conversation revolved around a simple question: will AI help defenders more than attackers? In 2026, that question is already too narrow. The emerging reality is more uncomfortable: both sides are advancing at once, and attackers are no longer using AI only for phishing copy or translation. They are now experimenting with “agentic” capabilities—systems that can execute steps semi-autonomously, adapt to outcomes, and continue operations with reduced human intervention.

This is not a minor shift. In the classic attack model, many tactical decisions depended on human operators: testing malware variants, adjusting stolen credentials, pivoting laterally, or deciding when to escalate privileges. With an agentic approach, parts of that loop are accelerated and automated. In other words, this is not only about speed; it is about operational continuity for attackers.

In cybersecurity, “agentic AI” is not just a chatbot with better answers. It refers to systems that can take an objective, split it into tasks, execute actions, assess results, and adjust the next step. That can mean more persistent campaigns, more efficient reconnaissance, and less predictable attack flows.

For defenders—SOC teams, blue teams, and CISOs—this creates a new kind of pressure: they must respond to threats that scale not only in volume, but also in tactical autonomy. A threat actor equipped with agentic tooling can iterate faster than traditional manual response playbooks.

A key sign of this transition is that recent reporting is no longer framing these scenarios as distant hypotheses. Security vendors and specialized media are describing concrete patterns of AI usage across multiple attack stages. The emerging consensus is clear: this is not conceptual hype; it is an operational change that demands immediate defensive adaptation.

There is also an important tension: while attackers experiment with aggressive automation, security vendors are deploying agents for triage, investigation, and automated response. This opens an “automation race” where advantage goes to whoever combines speed, context, and control most effectively.

Many organizations still underestimate a core risk: the biggest problem may not be an external malicious model, but internal agents operating with excessive privileges and weak boundaries. A poorly configured agent with broad access to critical systems can amplify mistakes, break workflows, or expose sensitive data even without explicit malicious intent.

That is why discussing AI in cybersecurity now requires discussing operational governance: what an agent can do, on which systems, with what authorization, with what traceability, and with what emergency brakes. Without that framework, companies may adopt autonomy in the name of efficiency while creating additional attack surface.

Beyond the hype, there is a practical agenda teams can execute now: maintain a full inventory of agents and automations, enforce true least privilege, keep human approval for high-impact actions, instrument agent-specific telemetry and auditing, run adversarial-abuse simulations, and update playbooks for agentic threats.

Cybersecurity is entering a phase where the key question is no longer whether to use AI, but how to use it without losing control. Attackers with agentic tooling force defenders to modernize, but modernization does not mean delegating everything to machines. It means building a hybrid system: fast automation, intelligent human oversight, and strict governance. Organizations that strike this balance will have an advantage. Those that do not may discover too late that their “intelligent” stack also opened new doors to old risks.

In short: agentic AI is already affecting real-world cybersecurity. It is not science fiction or conference buzz. It is an operational transition in progress, and organizations that act now—with technical discipline and strategic judgment—will be better prepared for the next threat cycle.
